The Next Open Source Battle Is Being Waged In The 3D Printing Industry | TechCrunch

Posted on

More than twenty years ago, Linux began wending its way out of the primordial soup that was the early Internet and ensconcing itself in servers and workstations around the world. After its creation in 1991 it took another eight years or so to be widely recognized, but during that period, arguments arose as to what Linux really was.Could Red Hat, a company founded in 1993, sell services around it?Who made money when you sold a CD containing the latest version of Mandrake Linux?Who owned code written on top of Linux for specific purposes?

Secured 3D Prints?

Posted on

Before we get into the service provided by Secured3D, you might want to know why one would even need secure 3D printing. The cause is actually file formats.Your 3D model files are converted into GCODE by a 3D printer’s slicing software. The GCODE actually instructs the printer to make the object.  So if you had possession of the GCODE file you could 3D print as many copies as you like.

The Tall 3D Printing Pattern Emerges

Posted on

At first it seemed to be sideline experiments, but now we are seeing a pattern.Tall 3D printers are here to stay.  In the beginning the build volume of most personal 3D printers was more or less a cube with almost equal sides.Like you’d see in a kitchen oven. However, over time experimenters worked out ways to create 3D printers that had a much larger z-axis, enabling the printing of tall objects.

The Project That Wouldn’t Exist Without 3D Printing

We spoke with Joergen Geerds, founder of Freedom360, a startup that manufactures a special plastic mount for GoPro Hero cameras. In fact, you can mount SIX cameras on the Freedom360 to capture a full 360 spherical view. The product also comes with software to integrate the six captured videos into a single spherical video.  Geerds explained that the product simply wouldn’t exist without his Ultimaker personal 3D printer, on which numerous prototypes were produced.Geerds used his machine to progressively develop increasingly functional experimental models until the final version was achieved.

The MX3D: A Robotic 3D Printer

Posted on

On the heels of its debut in May 2013, the MX3D-resin printer has already evolved from a machine only capable of building in plastic to one that can print in a variety of metals.Designed by Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) students Petr Novikov and Saša Jokić, the MX3D is a robotic arm actuated 3D printer capable of printing on any surface.Originally designed to produce parts using a fast curing resin, the original MX3D-Resin could print objects with any sweep and curve without the need of additional support structures.Building on their original design, Petr and Saša have teamed up with the Netherlands’ Joris Laarman Studio to advance their design and create a 3D printer that can build objects using metals that range from steel to copper.Read more at ENGINEERING.

Take Another Look At The Thingiverse 3D Printing Community API

Posted on

Have you taken a look at the Thingiverse developer area lately? It’s been a while since I reviewed it. A couple years ago while working at Mimeo as an API evangelist I had the pleasure of doing some deep research into not just printing APIs, but 3D printing APIs as well. I wrote a lot on the subject, but overall I was unhappy with what was available in the areas of 3D printing APIs. When you go to the Thingiverse API now, the landing page immediately tells you what is possible, gives you direct links to API documention, but also provides you what you need to get started, sign up and explore the Thingiverse API—a flow that is so very important! When you look at the API docs, you immediately see that the API is a simple web API allowing you to manage users, things, their files and copies, while being...
